VIDEO: Freight train hits Iceland delivery truck at March, Cambridgeshire

Engineers are working to re-open the rail line between Ely and Peterborough after a freight train struck the rear of a delivery truck on an unmanned crossing at March, Cambridgeshire.

Although the freight train has now been moved, Network Rail is forecasting disruption until 7pm.

There were no injuries reported as a result of the crash.

First photos from the scene show workmen examining potential damage and undertaking preliminary investigations into the incident that happened just before 3pm today (Tuesday).

The incident happened at the Silt Road crossing near Badgeney End as an Iceland delivery driver was heading out of March.

A statement from Greater Anglia said: “Due to a freight train hitting a road vehicle at a level crossing between Peterborough and Ely all lines are blocked.

“Impact: Train services running through these stations may be cancelled, delayed or revised. Disruption is expected until further notice”.

Greater Anglia advise to customers:
Unfortunately, train services between Ipswich and Peterborough are being disrupted due to a freight train colliding with a vehicle at a level crossing.
We are now unable to run our trains through from Ely to Peterborough as a result.

The emergency services have been informed and on route to the site to investigate.
We are looking to source rail replacement buses to operate between Ely and Peterborough, however due to bus operators working on other commitments we have been unsuccessful in acquiring the buses.

We are looking further afield and will inform you when the buses have been confirmed and on route to Ely and Peterborough.

Alternative Travel Options
If you are travelling from Peterborough to Ipswich, you may travel on GTR services to Hitchin/Stevenage or Kings Cross.
Change at Hitching or Stevenage for a service to Cambridge. At Cambridge, travel on our local service to Ipswich at no extra cost. Please allow extra time for your journey.

Customers at unstaffed stations between Ely and Peterborough are advised to use the on station Help Points.

East Midlands Railway and Cross Country Trains are also affected by this incident.
