40 firefighters tackle blaze at Indian restaurant in Fordham near Soham

Fire has damaged Indian Garden 2 restaurant – formerly the Crown public house – at Fordham near Soham.

Firefighters are currently responding to the fire on Church Street, Fordham.

Around 40 firefighters are in attendance from Cambridge, Cottenham, Burwell, Sawston, along with four appliances from Suffolk fire and Rescue Service.

Crews were called shortly after 6am to reports of a fire.

The road is currently closed while firefighters tackle the fire.

“Please avoid the area, and keep windows and doors closed if you can smell smoke,” said a fire service spokesperson.

One resident said: “The sirens started coming into the village between 6/6.30 this morning. Must be bad with the amount that have come. I hope everyone is safe. Sounds like more sirens are on the way.”

The Crown Inn was a public house until recently but planning permission was granted for a change of use to a restaurant in February 2021.

The Fordham restaurant is in the same ownership as Indian Garden at Littleport which opened in 1997.
