Large numbers of fish were found dead in the river between Stanground and Whittlesey. It happened earlier this week and Anglian Water and the Environment Agency are investigating.

A statement from Anglian Water said: “Following the issue affecting King’s Dyke in Stanground, we’re working closely alongside the Environment Agency to support their investigation.”

“There have also been reports of other issues in the area, and we’re looking into this alongside investigating our own assets.”

The statement added: “Our teams are currently monitoring the river water quality regularly, installing aeration which gives the fish extra oxygen, and are conducting a full environmental survey.

“We understand how distressing this is for the local community, and we are doing everything we can to establish the cause.”

A King’s Delph resident who has seen dead fish floating in the river near her home, said: “I’m pretty devastated as are my neighbours. I reported it to the Environment Agency last night.”

Angling clubs in Whittlesey Peterborough and Yaxley say they are working closely with the Environment Agency “who are on top of the situation and monitoring the situation as the slug of water heads towards Ashline Lock and hopefully prevent further fish deaths”.
