One of Cambridgeshire’s most influential clergy – the Dean of Ely – has urged his MP to support keeping benefits in line with inflation.

In a rare intervention, the Dean, the Very Rev Mark Bonney, wants Lucy Frazer, the MP for SE Cambridgeshire, to support his plea.

In a Sunday morning tweet, the 65-year-old cleric told Ms Frazer that “families across the UK face being pushed to the brink if the government breaks their promise to keep benefits in-line with inflation.

“Millions of children will be put at risk.”

He pleaded: “ Will you call on HM Treasury to do the right thing and #ProtectEveryChildhood?”

The dean has been in post for 10 years and chairs the Chapter, the Cathedral’s governing body, and oversees the mission and ministry of the cathedral.

Prime Minister Liz Truss is under pressure from MPs within her own party to commit to ensuring benefits rise in line with prices.

Her predecessor Boris Johnson had promised just that, and some members of her Cabinet believe it is the right thing to do.
