Care home’s Golden Wedding surprise party for resident and his wife

A couple who met at a launderette on Mill Road, Cambridge, have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

And Hilton Park care home was determined it would be a day of happy memories for the couple.

The home provided a surprise party with the Elvis classic ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love With You’ providing a suitable background for the occasion.

John, a resident of the care home, and his wife Margaret even had a special cake made for them by the Hilton Park chef Adriana.

General manager, Geanina Tinca at Hilton Park Care Home said: “We have had such a lovely day celebrating John and Margaret’s 50th anniversary.

“It’s so wonderful to see two people still very much in love after all these years!”

John and Margaret met in 1972 and married the following year.

Margaret’s mother had recently moved to the area and did not have a washing machine. Margaret offered to take her mother to the launderette.

Which turned out to be a fateful decision.it was there that Margaret and her mother met John, who would later become Margaret’s husband.

Margaret and John went on to have three children together, who in turn have them three grandchildren.

The secret to their long and happy marriage has been their willingness to give and take.

Despite having different interests and careers, they have always supported each other.

For instance, John was always very supportive of Margaret’s career in singing and dancing, both as a performer and as a teacher.

Margaret also raise money for different organizations through her performances. John often played the drums and sang in the performances like “Fiddler on the roof”.

John’s last job before moving to Hilton Park was a window salesman which he enjoyed very much.

Geanina said that live music at the party was by Debbie Lee.

“Activity lead Jenny requested that John’s favourite song, “Can’t falling in Love with you” by Elvis, be sung during the event, which made everyone emotional,” she said.

Hilton Park care home is run by Barchester Healthcare, one of the UK’s largest care providers. It provides residential care, nursing care and dementia care for residents from respite care to long term stays.
