A man from St Neots who sexually assaulted a girl more than 20 years ago has been jailed for 12 years.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, started abusing the girl in the early 2000s when she was 11 years old.

He began sexually abusing her and forced her to perform sex acts on him.

In early 2020, the victim came forward and reported the abuse to the police.

Shortly afterwards, the man, who is now in his 50s, was arrested.

He denied four counts of indecency with a child and three of indecent assault.

However, he was found guilty following a trial at Cambridge Crown Court last month.

On Thursday (15 December) at the same court he was jailed for 12 years.

He was also placed on the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely and given a 10-year restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim.

Sergeant Andy Free said: “The defendant in this case subjected the victim to horrendous and sustained abuse and I am pleased he has faced justice.

“I would like to commend the victim for the courage she showed in reporting what happened to her and throughout the court process. I hope she can now begin to rebuild her life.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage anyone who has been the victim of abuse to seek help and report it.

“We will investigate thoroughly and always seek to bring perpetrators before the courts wherever it is possible to do so.”
