Rail travel is slowly returning between Ely and Peterborough after a freight train collided with a delivery van at a level crossing in March. “From what I was told, no one was hurt,” one nearby resident said.

Both level crossings at Badgeney End and Stilt Road – where the incident happened – were closed for several hours.

The train at one point was said to be “stuck in between”.

Badgeney End was originally part of Silt Road until all of the residents were concerned that an unmanned railway crossing was being used by people visiting them and a request was submitted for that section of road to be renamed Badgeney End.

Last year, during a planning debate, councillors were told that Railtrack regard the unmanned gates as an occupational crossing and there has been no objection from the County Council.

East Midlands Railways said trains cannot run between Ely and Peterborough in both directions.

“Other train operators will accept your ticket at no extra cost to keep you on the move,” the company said.

Greater Anglia warned that “all lines are blocked. Train services running through these stations may be cancelled, delayed or revised. Disruption is expected until further notice”.
