GALLERY: Only the brave – or foolhardy – attempt crossing flooded A1101 at Welney

At least one driver and his passenger have been forced to climb out of a window and head for safety after getting stuck crossing the flooded A1101 at Welney today. Local Facebook group Welney Floodwatch is again offering regular updates to advise motorists and closed barriers have been erected.

Floodwatch says “river levels at Welney have risen again overnight, over 10cm up on yesterday currently 2.875.

“Expect the level of flood water on the road to be around 19 inches on the centre line now with that deeper area up to 25 inches. This may get deeper during the day.”

The Facebook group says flashing signs on Main Street Welney alert drivers to 18inches/46cm “which means there is deep water on the Welney wash road this morning.

The Environment Agency says: “River levels are rising steadily in response to recent heavy rainfall. Flooding is expected on the Hundred Foot (Ouse) Washes for several days.

“This information is correct as of 8am on 11/12/23. The causeway at Sutton Gault has approximately 52cm of water on the road.

“The causeway at Welney currently has approximately 50cm of water on the road. Norfolk County Council have closed Welney causeway.

“The causeway at Earith currently has water on the road. Due to the uneven surface of the roads, water may be deeper in places.

“Floodwater is travelling down the River Great Ouse towards the Ouse Washes which will keep levels high for several days. Avoid driving through floodwater. We are monitoring the situation. We will update this message by 6pm today, 11/12/2023.”
