Covid has been blamed for Fenland District Council not updating its tourism plans, council leader Chris Boden told councillors.

He was quizzed on the issue by opposition group leader Cllr Mike Cornwell on Monday.

Cllr Cornwell said he had recently been approached by ex-members of the former Fenland tourist board “and since disbanded” to ask what Fenland Council was doing for tourism.

He said tourism had been included in the Fenland “creativity and cultural strategy and from 2021 little seems to have happened on the tourism front”.

Cllr Cornwell asked Cllr Boden: “Can you indicate when something might happen or should industry take a lead in seeking a tourism partnership.

“Isn’t it about time we had a strategy from that update.”

Cllr Boden told Cllr Cornwell he was “quite correct – not much has happened recently. We had Covid. Covid put a stop to it.”

The leader promised there was “more to be done” and done in co-operation with existing providers.

“It is not going to be imposed on people – but reason you have seen very little change over last two years because of Covid.”

Cllr Cornwell added there had been “a resurgence of activity in that industry and they are beginning to say what is going on.

“Maybe that resurgence should be matched in some way of trying to help them recover lost ground, help that resurgence,

“We are not just talking about a narrow stream – inquiries have come from a number; I suspect someone has been some talking. I have asked the question.”
